The Academic Mentoring in the Community project is a unique framework for supporting and mentoring children in grades 4-9 who come from families faced with difficulties that are being helped by the city’s Social Inclusion Administration. A mapping of needs by the Department of Community Social Work revealed a significant need for preparing elementary school students for middle school by boosting their scholastic and social achievements. The project seeks to create an emotional, social and learning context for the children, using the social infrastructure of college and university students who are residents of the city.

About the program:

The program began in 2017. It provides a solution for dozens of school children who are mentored by students in small groups (up to three children per group) at community centers throughout the city. During their sessions, the students mentor the children and serve as role models while providing a broad program of social and academic activities, as well as emotional support.
The students who provide the mentoring undergo a specialized training process that focuses on children at risk and on fostering leadership and social involvement. The students benefit from significant, close support from the program’s coordinator, who provides individual and group guidance. The students’ scholarships are provided by the EZRAH association, the Women’s Circle, the Rishon LeZion Foundation and the College of Administration, which have partnered with the Department of Community Social Work to establish and run the program.

Project objectives:

• Prevent risk situations among children and provide learning advancement.

• Encourage, cooperate with and educate students toward social involvement, and establish them as a group that assumes responsibility for the community.

• Narrow social gaps.

• Strengthen the community.
